Green Bay Botanical Garden - Summer Collection

Green Bay Botanical Gardens
Summer  2012

The natural "Green Spaces" of the Green Bay Botanical Gardens has a little for everyone. There are beautiful structures, outdoor garden displays, sculptures, garden ornaments, paths and most of the gardens plant species are labeled in case you want to adopt some of them into your own gardens.  On the Thursday evening we were there, it was so busy with tours that we were barely able to take any pictures without people.  I would plan my next outing, sans humans if possible.  There is too much to see and explore and I like to meander, admire and be intimate with nature and my best friend, my camera. Enjoy!  More at CollectionsbyCarol.com.

New London, Wisconsin

I'm just warning you that traveling along the back roads of Wisconsin, as a photographer could be hazardous to your health, as around any turn or bend there might be a beautiful opportunity that you might not want to miss. So following suit along with the many farm vehicles traveling the roads, I am advising everyone planning to travel along this route, to get one of those slow moving vehicle signs to place in the back window of your vehicles.
I had an errand this last week that took me through the small town of New London.  I made several stops, some of which were appointments, but many more were based on the route I had chosen to take because of places I remember from my childhood along that route, places I would have liked to stop at, places I would like to have taken pictures of. The "Red Round Barn" and "Mosquito Hill" were among the planned stops.   But the "Foxgloves" growing along and fence, the railroad trestle, the farm vistas with the "Ton of Hay" and the "Sand-hill or Mississippi Crane?", were among the 'around the bend' stops.  Here are just a few images of that short trek.  The rest will be posted at:  CollectionsbyCarol.com  As always:  enjoy!  And let me know what you think...I always enjoy hearing from you!

Take me out to the ball game....

"Take me out to the ball game,  take me out to the park....
Buy me some peanuts and crackers jacks, I don't care if I never never get back.
O'' its root, root, root for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame
For it's one, two, three strikes you're out at the old ball game!"

This Saturday my husband and his parents paid homage to the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Stadium.  Reluctantly, (not a huge baseball fan), I tagged along with my best friend...my camera, of course.  As true Americans, we all love our sports teams and the Milwaukee Brewers are as American as apple pie, at least here in Wisconsin. So this weeks blog is dedicated to the "Fans" and the "Architecture" of the stadium.  Follow me (though, pictures of course) as I take in everything around me at Miller Stadium.... all the action, the players, the crowd, stadium-scapes, colors, the fans, the grass (not to mention the "noise", the dogs, the cheese curds and most importantly....the beer, even if I can't share that with you here). Remember all images are for sale at CollectionsbyCarol.com.  I promise the site will be live soon! Hopefully this weekend!

Keeping it Rural.....in Wisconsin

This last week I visited an old friend...actually it just felt like an old friend, its really an old location... Rural, Wisconsin. It is an area that I toddled upon as child, stomped on later as a teen and now cherish and honor by recording memories of in photo images. Whether you are nestled along the banks of or floating down the Crystal River, or traveling along on one of Wisconsin's Most Beautiful Rustic Roads...Rural Wisconsin will make you feel like you are coming home.
Because all of the properties in Rural are so "park" like and meticulously developed and maintained...you will feel the pull to navigate the properties...however almost all of the area is now privately owned and although the community is welcoming and gracious, I caution you to please ask permission before wandering or snapping photos.

Settled in the 1850's by pioneers from New England, the entire Village of Rural is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  Visitors to this small village, located along the Crystal River about six miles south of Waupaca, are encouraged to walk along the streets to see the Greek Revival-style homes a rare example of Yankee architecture in the Midwest.

Many of the owners of even the newer homes in the area have gone to great lengths and expense to "retro fit or adopt" an authentic feel or vibe along with their neighbors.  Included here are just a few of the beautiful images I captured that day of several of Rural's neighbors.  I would like to humbly thank all of the owners who granted me permission not only to take, but also to share photos here on the blog and on Capture Wisconsin.

The Favre Barn - The Backside Story

I'm here to show and tell the rest of the story  behind "Mr Rodgers Neighborhood!"  Are you looking forward to the 2012-13 Green Bay Packer Season?  Me too!   So is Ms Patti Schroeder of Larsen WI, who has been supporting the Packers in a "big" way for many years, dating as far back as Brett Favre's career with the team. The sign on the side of the historical barn has matured from supporting Brett Favre, to morning his loss, and cheering on his replacement Aaron Rodgers. The signs are constructed from re-purposed corrugated plastic which is old signage from Patti's "Clintonville Shell" gas station in downtown Clintonville.  And interestingly enough....this signage is just the beginning of the story.
#12 from the back!

On the backside of the "Farve Barn"now known as Mr "Rodgers" Neighborhood...is the PS Schroeder Estate....a pristine property with a lot of history, dating back to before Wisconsin was a state! Lovingly named by Patti's sister, the "PS Schroeder Estate" is located on "Manu" Road (named such by the Town of Winchester neighbors popular vote, in honor of Patti's -now deceased- pet duck) in the small community of Larsen, WI. And if you haven't noticed yet, take a good look, this particular barn has two cupolas with two different dates on them and for good reason. The first part of the barn was raised in 1895. The second half was added in 1906.  And if just those few facts are not interesting enough, Patti Schroeder of Larsen, WI  has plenty more stories to tell.  Patti is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, she is well loved and respected in the Town of Winchester (hence the proof in her neighbors naming the road after her beloved duck) and shared almost 2 hours of her time off this Sunday, to show me around her lovely restored home and farm.

Patti has preserved the entire farm exactly as it is: including the house, the summer kitchen, the old cold smoke house, the pump house, and the 117 year old barn.  Each one of the outbuildings on the farm has its own unique history and usage. (Several buildings were not accessible at this time because of the storms from last year, in which I believe Patti said, she lost 13 full grown trees.)  Patti has also lovingly planted an orchard, new and old trees both grace the property, some with there own stories, several planted in the memory of personal friends of Patti's. Patti also landscaped the entire area surrounding the buildings and although some of the properties grounds have fallen victim to over growth, she still showed me her enchanted woods marked by a sign:  Enter these enchanted woods, you who dare! A favorite poem of Patti's by George Meredith....I'll include it here at the end of the Blog.  I took close to 250 photos at this location alone.  A lot of them will not make the cut, but many will be added to a "Collection" and available for purchase in the next month or so.  20 will be posted on this weeks "Capture Wisconsin's" Photo Contest this Thursday.
Colors reflected from sign

I want to thank Patti for her time and effort, for the tour, for the contributions she has made to the community, to Packer Country, to the preservation of a beautiful historic country farm estate here in Wisconsin.  And I want to wish her well.  Her work on the estate will hopefully continue until she passes the torch on to another.

"Enter these enchanted woods, You who dare. Nothing harms beneath the leaves More than waves a swimmer cleaves. Toss your heart up with the lark, Foot at peace with mouse and worm, Fair you fare. Only at a dread of dark Quaver, and they quit their form: Thousand eyeballs under hoods Have you by the hair. Enter these enchanted woods, You who dare."
