September 1rst was the 7th Annual Kites Over Lake Michigan now one of the largest kite
festivals in the Midwest and attracts kite-fliers from all over the Midwest. There were giant show kites, precision stunt kite teams flying dual- and quad-line kites, spectacular and colorful ground displays, running of the bols, and games for kids. We observed how to fly two and quad line stunt kites from the experts. There was a night fly on Saturday night and a bonfire on the beach. But regretfully, because of the high winds the release of Sky Lanterns on the beach never happened. In its place there was a Tesla Coils demonstration and the Fireworks Show was directly over our heads! Because
everything is dependent on
the wind conditions
at that time, the kitefliers have to operate on what they call "kite
time" and all activities
are based on that. For example if the wind is light, the stunts teams
can still fly with their low wind kites but the giant show kites will
likely be grounded until the wind picks up. We took our chairs with us
and a small cooler and just enjoyed the day and night with fellow high
flyers, next to the sounds of surf on Lake Michigan, along with
thousands of our closest friends! Don't miss the show next year its a
great family event and its free!
