EAA - Air Venture 2012 - Super Saturday - 7/28/12

Starting with meager beginnings from September 1953 (a year before I was born) with fewer than 150 registered visitors...the EAA Air Venture of 2012..."The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration" brought over 500,000 aviation enthusiasts including 2,100 international visitors from more than 69 countries to the EAA 1400 acres including the Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin this week; and my husband and I were two of them. Although we drove only 30 miles to get to the air show, for many, arriving at Oshkosh is a rite of passage that can only be satisfied by being one of the more than 10,000 aircraft flying in, landing at what becomes the busiest airport in the world.  What brings these visitors on sometimes an annual pilgrimage is: daily air shows with aerobatics and pyrotechnics, 1000 vintage or antique planes including the most popular war-birds, 1000 home-builts and ultra-lights, more than 2500 show-planes, 800 exhibitors and more importantly the opportunity to rekindle friendships and celebrate the past, present and future in the world of flight.  Surprisingly, the small force of 4800 volunteers take on the daunting task of celebrating the history of aviation with a kinship unknown or unrivaled anywhere else in the world...right here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin!

In the week long tribute to the "Greatest Generation in the Air" "Super Saturday"....lets just say "DELIVERED".  We started our day at the EAA Museum after which we caught a bus to the EAA grounds.  We took pictures until our feet hurt and then we caught the 3:30pm  "Rockwell Collins Air Show" and the War-birds Extravaganza including the:  "Tora, Tora, Tora" aerial reenactment of the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, presented by volunteers and aircraft of the Commemorative Air Force that included professional narration, ground operations, maintenance, pilots and pyrotechnic experts.  Its purpose to create a dynamic interactive historic lesson about the event that propelled the United States into World War II; where we did not only see and hear multiple explosions, but also felt and smelt the smoke and heat of  - definitely one of the most dazzling war-bird air show performances ever! The Canadian Skyhawk's Parachute Team performed not only once on Saturday but twice: flying in formation performing "para-batics" completing tricks like the Canadian T,  Candy Cane, Three Stack Drag and even a Tri-Bi-Side canopy. We just missed taking pictures of the "Red Bull Helicopter" that does back flips and barrel rolls (we were standing in line for food, the line was a mile long and we had to eat sometime) but we did see the performance!

The Rockwell Night Air Show and Fireworks Show started at 8:30pm and concluded with a "Wall of Fire" that spanned the entire length of the airfield at 10:30pm.  It was an amazing day and ended in an even more amazing evening!  Planes outfitted with lights, smoke and fireworks lit up the sky including:  Elgin Wells, Starjammer Aircraft equipped with 250 super bright LED lights, 5 smoke streamers, fireworks, and a 4,000 watt amplifier and onboard loud speaker; Gene Soucy Airshows, with fireworks mounted on all four of the wing tips of the ShowCat; and the AeroShell Aerobatics Team 4 of the best T-6s performing in unison to music with lights and smoke at dusk.  And the weather couldn't have been more cooperative.   I haven't been attending the airshows since the kids were in middle school, so most of the performances were a total surprise....now days its close to being on a movie set....very dramatic....sure to please....I definitely recommend you catch a show next year!  (Hint:  Consider Super Saturday, if you can tolerate the crowds)

Park to Park Paddle - Appleton, WI

This past Saturday, July 21st, while I was at Art Mart in Downtown Appleton on College Avenue; Roy attended and took pictures at the "Park to Park Paddle" adventure in the Fox Cities. The NEWP (Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers) group started this annual journey in 2002 with 21 kayaks and has now entered its 11th year and has grown to as many as 350 participants. Now not only does the group include many colorful kayaks and canoes, but also included a racing shell and a paddle-boarder! The NEWP group passes through or past 9 fairly popular parks within the Fox Valley Area. (Many of the parks which we have covered in previous weeks - and that is what made this event so interesting.)  The Paddle Trail started in the Fox River at Shattuck Park (in Downtown Neenah); passed Riverside Park (Neenah); just skirted Kimberly Point Park and Lighthouse (Neenah); entered Lake Winnebago just skirting Jefferson Park (Menasha); then on to Smith Park (Menasha); entering the Menasha Lock where the group crossed Little Lake Butte Des Morts; traveled just NE of  Fritse Park's and the Fox Cities Friendship Trestle Trail - and Bridge; and continued all the way up the Fox River to Lutz Park in Appleton; an overall 8.5 mile venture that takes most paddlers approximately 4 hours.  It looked like a good time was had by all.  Enjoy the photos....and as always let me know what you think! And just in case You are interested here is the link for the site:  http://www.wisconsinpaddlers.org

Chalkfest - 2012 Wausau, Wisconsin

2012's Annual Chalkfest covered the entire 400 Block in Downtown Wausau this weekend which was transformed with colorful drawings during the annual sidewalk art festival. This community event was for artists of all ages and levels of ability to participate and for art enthusiasts to observe and enjoy.  As the artists competed in the race for transforming the sidewalk into art,  children were invited to create their own chalk creations.

Wausau Balloon Fest and Glow, Wausau, Wisconsin

Wausau Wisconsin - Balloon Rally & Glow

The  Hot Air Balloon Rally and Glow at the Wausau Municipal Airport, has something for everyone - beautiful hot air balloons, live music, delicious food - including the Big Bull Falls BBQ Rib Fest, pig racing, petting zoo, children's activities, pony rides, barnstormer plane rides, kite-flying demos, and live music and a spectacular fireworks show. And the best feature: entry onto the grounds was FREE. The event planners expected to draw more than 25,000 visitors from around the state and I can guarantee organizers they exceeded their expectations, as many vendors ran short or out of food and the line for refreshments was "long" but luckily replenished often.

The always avid Wisconsin Kiters Club kept grounds crowds entertained between the morning launch and evening glow.  The pancake breakfast started the day right after the launch and the BBQ Rib Fest took over around noon, not to mention Mac and Cheese, Deep Fried Cheese Curds, Shaved Ice Etc.  Music floated over the crowd both before and after the Glow on both Friday and Saturday nights.  And in between, you could visit the petting zoo, take a pony or a biplane ride.

On Saturday evening the fireworks brought the crowd to their feet with large, loud, colorful and abundant displays from both the ground and the sky.  No one was disappointed! Many cried "encore"!

Definitely put this family friendly, free event and activity on your calendars for next year....the only recommendation from me is to "stay and play".  Activities start on Thursday and run through Sunday and because most of it is dependent on outside activity....many of the events need to be flexible with the weather And you don't want to miss a thing!

"High as a Kite"

Wisconsin Kiters - Shawano Kite Festival -  June 23rd, 2012

Back in March of 2012, I attended  my first, Green Bay Winterfest in Downtown Green Bay, on Broadway and one of the features of the event was Kites over the Fox River which was put on by the Wisconsin Kiters Club.  It was bitterly cold, but these brave souls banned together....and let it fly....literally.  When I got home, I checked the web and Facebook and became fast friends with some of the fliers. Just recently I attended the Shawano Kite Festival, which you see representations of some of the kites here.  They had a little trouble with flying the bigger kites and kites with the bigger tails, but they marched on with smaller versions.  You see....kiters never give up.  They have their small kites, their medium kites, their large kites and their add-ons.  They have different size and weight lines. And they have everything with them...at all times.  They almost always have a "kite-making" class for kids where ever they go and they are the most welcoming group I have ever had the pleasure of joining.  Ed and Bob are the official/unofficial group leaders and posters for the site and have a real love for the sport.  The Shawano Kite Festival, was also host to the Chicago 180GO Stunt Flying Team....though at the time I was there, we really didn't see much action....they needed more wind.  And there were also Hot Air Balloons....gotta love anything that is airborne (can't remember an EAA event that we missed) the bad news:  I definately missed the hot air balloons, we headed out after the rain.

The good news:  The Hot Air Balloons will be back and so will the Wisconsin Kiters Club.  This weekend at the Wausau Municipal Airport see the hot link below for an events listing:
